The Antitrust Unit investigates complaints alleging violations of State and federal antitrust laws within Rhode Island. In addition the unit monitors multi-state actions and, when appropriate, prepares the necessary legal documents for joiner by Rhode Island. For the third year in succession, the efforts of the Antitrust Unit resulted in an increase in the total amount of cash and merchandise awarded to Rhode Island. The multi-sate cases active at the close of 2002 included cases against the following companies: Indirect Vitamins Purchasers, Cardizem, Compact Disc Minimum Advertised Price Litigation (defendants include EMI, WEA, Sony, BMG, and Universal), Wal-Mart, Ford Motor Company, and H & R Block.
