Genevieve Martin, Assistant Attorney General, Unit Chief
The Insurance Advocacy Unit fulfills the statutory mandate that the Attorney General represent, protect and advocate the rights of consumers at insurance rate hearings. The Unit provides consumer assistance and consumer representation on task forces, commissions, and committees, as well as in reviewing and drafting of legislation and of Administrative Procedures Act Rules and Regulations.
The Unit addresses health care fraud, which directly increases health insurance premiums. The Unit conducts or assists numerous investigations/reviews ranging from access to health care to fraud and misuse of services. Many of the investigations are initiated through consumer complaints.
The Unit provides consumer education concerning insurance fraud by serving on several committees and task forces and by participating in community outreach programs.
The Unit investigates and assists the criminal division when activities may constitute criminal conduct. In addition, the Unit works with insurance companies to develop fraud detection systems. Such programs can directly correlate to premium reductions.
