The Information Charging component of the Intake Unit prepares information on all felony cases, with the exception of Grand Jury cases, filed in Providence County. The information charging personnel handle scheduling of screenings, prepare the actual information, report out cases, do the initial data entry into the Court computer system, and close out the District Court cases.

Information charging is an essential part of criminal prosecution as the majority of all cases that enter the system start here. There is a very short time period mandated by the court between the time of arrest and formal charging.

Grand Jury:

The Intake Unit is also responsible for the presentation of criminal matters to the grand jury. They work closely with local and state police departments in preparing cases for submission to the grand jury.
