Newport County Office

Located in the historic Florence Murray Judicial Complex, the Newport County office is comprised of two prosecutors, one out-of-county screening prosecutor, two support staff and one victim/witness liaison who splits time with the Washington County Office. The Office is responsible for all county-wide felony prosecutions from the following police departments: Newport, Jamestown, Portsmouth, Middletown, Tiverton, Little Compton, State Police-Portsmouth and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.

In 2013, the Newport County Office disposed of more than 306 criminal cases, of which nolo contendere pleas accounted for 270 of those dispositions.

Three cases were disposed of by filing, and 28 cases were dismissed. Of the Superior Court cases disposed of last year, 74 were by waiver of criminal information. The Office also handled 82 violations of probation and bail, and 19 cases that were misdemeanor appeals from District Court.

Two murder cases were presented to the Newport County Grand Jury, with indictments handed out in each. Last year, 395 felony cases were submitted for information charging, of which 183 were charged, 32 were deemed ā€œno informations,ā€ 22 cases were remanded to District Court, three were referred to Diversion, 151 cases were carried over and 74 cases were resolved by waiver of criminal information.

The Newport County Office handled 487 substantive matters before District Court, including 294 violations of probation or bail, six trials, 102 bail reviews, 18 second-offense chemical refusal tests, two fugitive from justice matters and disposed of 65 misdemeanors.
